Despite the current apartheid function of the settlements, as well as the militarized urban typology they constitute, and the catastrophic apartheid separation wall; they can accidentally play a solution in the post-occupation future.

This proposal aims to create solution for the post –occupation challenges represented in unifying the separated islands and integrating the settlements within the urban fabric of the Palestinian city without creating a cultural and social segregation between the Palestinian unified areas.

The segregation between areas is characterized by several barriers, which are represented by the highways, the valleys and site topography, the separation wall, …, etc. Our concept is to reconnect “stitch” these segregated areas trough multi-level bridge structures that hosts communal functions and activities and that have both vehicle and pedestrian routs.

The structure of the bridge is composed of the precast elements of the separation apartheid wall to be dismantled and reused as blade walls to form an urban scaffolding. The typology of the scaffolding as a temporal structure defuses the militarized urban typology of the settlements and homogenize the urban fabric of the city. The wall has transformed from being a separation medium into being a connecting medium.

We have selected the site of Shu’fat refugee camp in East Jerusalem and the surrounding settlement of Pisgat Ze’ev to adapt the stitching strategy. Shu’fat camp has been entirely walled off by the apartheid wall, situated on the hill of Anata and separated from the Pisgat Ze’ev by Wadi Al Halaf and Anata forest. Identifying the communal places and landmarks in each zone to be the connecting points.
